Eligibility: Holders of a Master degree, obtained within the past 3 years at the call closing date, affiliated to a university of the French-speaking Community of Belgium.
Period: 2 years, renewable once.

FWO - PhD Fellowship fundamental research

Postdoctoral fellowships – All topics
F.R.S.-FNRS Postdoctoral Researcher
Eligibility: Researchers holding a doctorate obtained after defending a thesis within 5 years prior to the call closing date. The applicant must have the support of a project leader who is permanently affiliated to a university of the French-speaking Community of Belgium.
Period: 3-year fixed-term contract. In addition, the fellowship can be used over a period of 6 years if an external funding is obtained in order to carry out a postdoctoral research outside the Wallonia-Brussels Federation.

FWO – Junior Postdoctoral Fellowship
Eligibility: Researchers holding a doctorate obtained after defending a thesis within 3 years before 1 October of the year in which the fellowship would start, or at 1 June of that year at the latest. The applicant must have the support of a supervisor who is permanently affiliated to a Flemish university or research institute.
Period: 3 years.

FWO – Senior Postdoctoral Fellowship
Eligibility: Researchers holding a PhD degree awarded minimum 3 years and maximum 6 years before 1 October of the year in which the fellowship would start. The applicant must have the support of a supervisor who is permanently affiliated to a Flemish university or research institute.

European Fellowship:
Eligibility: Researchers, coming to or moving within Europe, that hold a doctorate or have at least four years’ research experience at the date of the call deadline.
Period: 1 to 2 years

Global Fellowship:
Eligibility: Researchers, going outside Europe, that hold a doctorate or have at least four years’ research experience at the date of the call deadline.
Period: 2 to 3 years, including a mandatory 12-month return phase in Europe.
Procedure: Electronic submission via the Participant Portal of the European Commission (the call usually opens in April and closes in September). Proposals must be submitted by the project leader of the researcher’s host institution.

Belgian American Educational Foundation (BAEF) Fellowships
Grants for doctoral and postdoctoral researchers to travel to the United States:
Eligibility: Applicants must be Belgian nationals.
Period: 1 year.
Procedure: Electronic submission via the BAEF website (calls take place once a year and close on 31 October of the year preceding travel to the United States).

Grants for U.S. citizens to study or perform research in Belgium:
Eligibility: Applicants must be citizens or permanent residents of the United States. Post-doctoral applicants should by July of the year in which the fellowship would start have no more than 2 years since obtaining their PhD degree.
Period: Fellowships are awarded for a minimum of 6 months, but are usually awarded for 1 year.
Procedure: Application form can be downloaded from the BAEF website (application deadline is October 31).

Grant from the Fund for Research Training in Industry and Agriculture (FRIA)
Eligibility: Holders of a Master’s degree in one of the health science, science and technology or psychology sciences disciplines listed under the FRIA regulations, obtained within the past seven years, and who meet the PhD entry requirements. The applicant must have the support of a supervisor who is permanently affiliated to a university of the French-speaking Community of Belgium.
Period: Grant for 27 months (or 15 months if the applicant applies after one year of PhD), renewable for 21 months.

Wallonia-Brussels International (WBI) doctoral and postdoctoral grant

Period: Long-term grant for at least one year, renewable once, or short-term grant for a time period between one and three months.
